Following suit of the pilot program by Volvo CE in Southern California which lasted for almost a year, the subsidiary of Volvo, Volvo CE (Volvo Construction Equipment) showcased the prowess and quietness of their electric construction equipment live and was streamed featuring Volvo CE’s latest ECR25 Electric compact excavator that held many in awe. Market observers have noted the speed at which Volvo CE is moving with regards to the development and manufacturing of heavy industry equipment for the construction industry and other similar industries (i.e. forestry and mining). This nevertheless, should not come as a surprise given the fact that Volvo has a history of almost 200 years when in the 1830s, the founders of the company managed to develop the first tractor for Sweden in 1913. Volvo Group bought over the entity in 1950 and without much modification to the original business structure, Volvo CE has been successfully developing and manufacturing construction equipment and is a force to be reckoned with among the heavy industry players.

Although previously the primary product scope of Volvo CE was mainly diesel powered machines, Volvo CE was compelled to take after its parent company with regards to integrating electric options to machines within the objective to support the ‘zero-emissions future’ cause. It was in 2019 that the Company announced the dismantling of their diesel engine-based compact wheel loaders and excavators and realigned their manufacturing facility towards the production of electric machines, and given the fact that it was during the COVID menace, the company’s progress towards this objective is nothing short of exemplary. Within a single year (end of 2020), Volvo CE was already in the electric excavator market based on the fact that they were already delivering electric construction equipment to French construction outfits with the ECR25 Electric compact excavator.

A press release which coincided with a live-stream event in LA, Volvo CE was generously sharing knowledge gained from the yearlong pilot initiative. According to the press release, the battery-powered ECR25 was a cornerstone towards being able to accelerate the deployment of construction equipment technologies that were electric based. The project was nothing short of an informative success that made a difference towards their all-electric solutions objective. It was due to the data collected and consolidated during the pilot program that allowed Volvo CE to meet the demands of clients who expected high performance construction equipment especially within the realm of excavator hire services. Stephen Roy, who is the President for Volvo CE North America, was happy to elaborate on the driving factors which he pointed out clearly were their customers. He further quoted that the program and the subsequent development added more momentum to Volvo’s vision of and commitment to de-carbonization. This statement was supported by tests that proved that 400 of operating an electric excavator reduced approximately 6 metric tons of CO2 emissions, and saves nearly $2,400 on fuel. To top it off, these machines could also be operated indoors where ventilation is poor and not further pollute the air.
