1. Defense Distinguished Service Medal
The Defense Distinguished Service Medal, which was established on July 9, 1970, is given by the Secretary of Defense to members of the United States Armed Forces for exceptionally high-caliber execution of duty and contributions to national security or defence. It is the highest joint service decoration honour as well as the highest non-combat-related military award given by the United States.
2. Defense Superior Service Medal
The Defense Superior Service Medal, which was established on 6 February 1976, is given by the Secretary of Defense to personnel of the United States Armed Forces who have performed exceptionally well in a position of high responsibility after that date.
The Defense Superior Service Medal and the Defense Distinguished Service Medal have the same style. The inscriptions on the back of the medal have been changed to indicate the distinction between the prizes, and it is finished in silver rather than gold.
3. Defense Meritorious Service Medal
The Defense Meritorious Service Medal (DMSM), which was established on 3 November 1977, is given to members of the US Armed Forces who have distinguished themselves through non-combat meritorious achievement or service. Under conflict conditions, it is not utilised to acknowledge meritorious service or success (Bronze Star Medal).
4. Joint Service Commendation Medal
The Joint Service Commendation Medal, which was established on 25 June 1963 by the Secretary of Defense, is given to personnel of the United States Armed Forces who have distinguished themselves through noteworthy performance or service on or after 1 January 1963.
5. Joint Service Achievement Medal
The Joint Service Achievement Medal awards were established by the Secretary of Defense on August 3, 1983, and are given to members of the United States Armed Forces with a grade of 0–6 (Colonel) or lower who have distinguished themselves by the exceptional performance of duty and meritorious achievement after August 3, 1983.
6. Purple Heart
General George Washington first created the Purple Heart on August 7, 1782. It was reinstated on February 22nd, 1932. In contrast to all other decorations, the Purple Heart does not need a person to be "recommended" for it. Instead of a recommendation, a person is entitled to it after fulfilling certain requirements.
7. Prisoner of War Medal
Any person who was taken prisoner and held hostage after 5 April 1917 while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Armed Forces is eligible to receive the Prisoner of War Medal (POW).
