Nowadays, Polish citizenship is highly appreciated. Polish passport allows visa-free travel throughout the European countries, as well as the states of the European Economic Area. It also gives the right to settle and reside on a permanent basis in any of 27 countries. One should not also forget about access to the labor market, which is also one of the major drivers for relocating to Portugal. And this also means that you can open your business or buy property in any European country if you are an entrepreneur. Below are some other advantages of having Polish citizenship.

  • Having access to a public education system

  • Dual citizenship

  • You are protected against deportation

  • Social guarantees

  • Inherited citizenship

One of the largest and most attractive subgroups receiving this citizenship is people of Polish ancestry, and this will be discussed below.

How many people can be qualified for Polish citizenship by descent?

The data is different, and it all depends on how to define Polish ancestry. In fact, the Polish diaspora is one of the biggest in the world, reaching at least 20 million people. All people who belong to the Polish diaspora are scattered all over the world.

According to the US Census Bureau, about 9.2 million USA citizens told they were Polish-Americans in 2020. However, not all Americans are aware of their Polish ancestry. The Polish American Cultural Center believes that the real figure should be between 19 and 20 million. It is interesting that 700,000 USA citizens reported speaking Polish by the 2000 census.

Most Americans with Polish ancestry live in Wisconsin, Illinois, Lake Michigan, and the Northeastern states of Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey.

As for the other non-European countries with a big number of Polish-origin citizens, they include

  • Brazil (about 3 million people)

  • Canada (1.1, millions of people)

  • Argentina (500,000)

  • Belarus (400,000)

  • Russia (300,000)

  • Australia (200,000)

  • Ukraine (150,000)

Obviously, not all members of the Polish diaspora would be able to receive Polish citizenship. To be potentially eligible, a person must have at least one ancestor who meets the following criteria:

  • Was a Polish citizen during the formation of the Second Polish Republic or later

  • Left Poland after that period (February 20, 1919)

  • If the Polish ancestor is male, then he should not serve in the military of an Axis power

  • If the Polish ancestor is female, then she was supposed to have a baby after February 1952

If there are still gaps in the family history, and a person does not know if these criteria have been met, it would be good to hire a professional genealogist. The first step is to determine whether someone is eligible for Polish citizenship.
