Most people shower. And taking a shower seems easy enough. But not everyone does it right.

Typically, you should shower for 5-10 minutes and only once per day at most. Over-showering can actually be bad for your skin by causing it to dry out.

The following simple washing routine will make your showers both more effective and efficient:

1. Rinse

Start each shower by turning on cold or warm water, but avoid turning it too hot. Hot water removes essential oils from your body and dries out your skin.

Give your whole body a good rinse. Covering it in water will get rid of dirt and dust and prime your skin to be washed.

2. Wash Your Hair

Wash your hair before anything else. This allows you to still wash off any residual soap and dirt that falls from your hair when you wash your body.

Shampoo first. The type of shampoo you use will depend on your hair type. If you have sensitive skin, you may opt for a gentle shampoo without any irritating oils or fragrances. If you have dandruff, get an anti-dandruff shampoo.

Next, use a conditioner if you need one. Conditioner makes your hair softer and easier to manage.

3. Wash Your Face

Whether you have acne or not, washing your face is important. And you might as well do it in the shower while you’re already wet. Wash your face 2-3 times per week.

Use a gentle exfoliating cleanser. Again, get a face wash that complements your skin type.

And don’t forget to wash the back of your neck and behind your ears, where most people forget to. When you’re done, rinse off the soap with water.

4. Wash Your Body

Now comes the main step—washing your body. Here, you have the option of using a loofah or washcloth or just your hands. While using a loofah or washcloth can help spread the soap further, they also tend to get dirty unless you’re good at washing them regularly. So choose what works for you.

Choose the right body wash or soap for your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, find a hypoallergenic option that doesn’t have any fragrance.

Though lathering your whole body is fine, you don’t actually need to wash everywhere. Focus on the areas that get the most dirt and sweat. Don’t irritate your skin by scrubbing too hard if it doesn’t need it. Soap, hot water, and pressure all pull moisture from your skin. So you shouldn’t overdo it.

And don’t forget to scrub between your toes!

5. Shave

Shaving in the shower is by no means a requirement. However, it can be an effective way to kill two birds with one stone. Whether you are shaving your face or your legs, the shower can be an ideal time and place to do it.

The warm water also helps open up your pores, which softens your skin and makes shaving safer.

But always be careful handling sharp blades when your body is exposed. And go against the grain of your hair to prevent razor bumps.

When you’re done, rinse off any shaving cream or soap with water.

6. Dry Off

Now it’s time to dry off. Use a towel or robe to dry your hair and skin. You want to get all the moisture off so you can get into some dry clothes later.

Be careful stepping out of the shower and through shower doors as well. You don’t want to slip on a wet floor and get hurt.

7. Apply Lotion

If you like, apply lotion to your skin to make it feel smooth and smell nice. This will help moisturize your skin and prevent it from drying.

And that’s it! Now you know how to get the most out of your showers by streamlining your hygiene routines and keeping your skin healthy and clean.
