What Is Lithium Titanate Battery?Lithium titanate battery also called LTO battery. Lithium titanate battery is a lithium ion battery with lithium titanate as the negative electrode. It has been widely used because of its high safety, high stability, excellent performance, long cycle life, and environmental friendliness. How Does Lithium Titanate Battery Work?
Lithium titanate batteries, like ordinary lithium batteries, consists of an anode, a cathode, a separator, an electrolyte, and two current collectors (positive and negative). Unlike ordinary batteries, the anode is made of lithium titanate nanocrystals. The anode and cathode store lithium. The electrolyte carries positively charged lithium ions from the anode to the cathode and vice versa through the separator. The movement of lithium ions generates free electrons in the anode, which creates a charge at the positive current collector. Current then flows from the current collector through the device being powered (phone, computer, etc.) to the negative current collector. Separators prevent the flow of electrons inside the battery.

Advantages of Lithium Titanate Battery

When a short-circuit fault occurs, the ohmic impedance increases sharply, inhibiting the discharge reaction, and will not cause excessive instantaneous current and temperature rise; the lithium titanate battery itself is not flammable; the charging potential platform is slightly lower than 1.55V. Even in the later stage of charging, low temperature or high rate charging, the potential of the negative electrode will not reach the potential where lithium ions are reduced to metal lithium, and there will be no safety accidents caused by lithium precipitation.
- Cycle life
The volume change of the lithium titanate battery during the cycle is only 0.1%~0.3%, which can avoid the structural change caused by the tensile change of the material during the charging and discharging process. Thereby improving the performance of the electrode and reducing the large attenuation of specific capacity; the cycle process will not produce SEI film. The volume of other lithium batteries expands by about 10% during the cycle, causing the battery to expand; a layer of SEI passivation film is formed on the electrode surface. Both of these will reduce its cycle life.

Due to its stable structure, lithium titanate batteries are especially suitable for use in low temperature environments, and can be used at temperatures of -40 to 60 degrees.
- Excellent fast charging performance
Compared with carbon anode materials, lithium titanate has a higher lithium ion diffusion coefficient and can be charged and discharged at a high rate. While greatly shortening the charging time, it has less impact on the cycle life and has stronger thermal stability. After testing, the lithium titanate battery developed with the latest technology can be fully charged in about ten minutes, which is a qualitative leap compared with traditional batteries.
Disdvantages of Lithium Titanate Battery
Due to the high price of lithium titanate batteries, compared with the mainstream graphite anode lithium batteries, the market share is very small. Statistics show that in new energy buses, the market share of lithium titanate batteries is about 3%, which is far lower than the 88% market share of lithium iron phosphate batteries. In the field of passenger vehicles, lithium titanate batteries together with other niche technologies occupy 3% of the market space.
