There’s nothing easy about hiring new talent; it’s complicated and time-consuming. From reading the resumes of each applicant and the process of conducting interviews to choosing the best applicant for your company is exhausting. For most companies, their hiring process is more about choosing the right person for the job without knowing who they are. When it comes to attracting and securing the best candidate, their values must align with your company's mission and values.
No matter what size company you may have, it’s essential that you create and implement a hiring strategy that will prove to be effective. There are some major mistakes that most companies are making, and you need to avoid them in order to make a decision based on creativity, adaptability, personality, and work skills.
If you’ve been making any of these mistakes when hiring employees, it’s likely you’ve been suffering the consequences of your decisions. Hiring new people is a daunting task, and if you follow these simple techniques, you’ll find that they improve the process and retain employees longer.
Here are the four common mistakes that most employers make:
Hiring The First Person That Seems To Fit
Hiring someone that looks good on paper and seems to be the perfect fit doesn’t make them the right choice. The problem with this is you don’t know much about their leadership, whether they’re a team player or about their creativity. These are important qualities when hiring anyone.
A great way to uncover these things is by having interviews outside of the traditional settings or giving them an on-site tour that will allow them to feel more comfortable. These things allow for the potential candidate to open up so that you can uncover who they really are. Hiring someone who fits your business’s culture and values will enable them to transition into your business easily.
Hiring Based on a Recommendation Alone
Recommendations are great because it speaks highly of the person's work ethic, and character, but that doesn’t mean that they are necessarily the right person for the job. Just because a friend, family member, or former co-worker referred them to you doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put them through the same process you would for any new hire. Be sure that you are interviewing them appropriately and doing an employee background check, and any required testing necessary to fill the position.
Not Looking Into Their Work
This can prove to be a big mistake. Checking work samples is a great way to uncover the skills of the potential candidate. For graduates, they’ll be able to include a project from a relevant class that will allow you to predict their performance better. It’s often surprising who holds the skills that you’re looking for. You just might find that hidden gem, or at the least uncover their work, doesn’t match your needs.
Are They Able To Adapt to Your Culture
Your company's culture is centered around your values, policies, training methods, and social and physical work environment. The organizational culture is important, and if they are not adaptable, it’s likely they will not last long or perform well. So whether it’s a hip and collaborative with an open door policy or if you have a traditional environment with people above them you need to know that their values and work ethic will fit. Most often, recent graduates are the perfect fit for any company because of their adaptability.
Hiring new graduates that fit into your values, work environment, and vision will have a lot to offer your business. For the most part, most graduates are tech-savvy, team players, coachable, can easily adapt to new environments, and work for less money than someone with experience. But hiring based on what they look like on paper isn’t going to be enough. Taking the time to carefully evaluate and get to know the potential candidates will prove to be well worth it.
Following these simple steps will help you to reduce the costs associated with training and mentoring new employees, control the environment within your workplace and add new skills to the team to spark creativity and productivity.
