The new pro football season is very much alive. Although we're barely four weeks into the season, the NFL hasn't disappointed when it comes to bringing all the drama and thrill.
With the league starting to heat up, is it too early to start making playoff predictions? Of course not. Unlike most other leagues, the NFL's 17-game regular season schedule makes every matchup significant, and teams that find themselves in the deep end as early as this stage in the season leave themselves a huge mountain to subdue.
So, how have the first four weeks shaped up the postseason race so far?
Philly Heavy Favorites
Last season's Super Bowl winners the Los Angeles Rams were deemed one of the heavy favorites to win the championship entering the new season. However, the Rams have put up unconvincing displays, with a 2-1 start and a game against the San Francisco 49ers in week 4.
The Philadelphia Eagles, on the other hand, have soared to a 4-0 start, and are on course to hit the 12-win mark as predicted by some oddsmakers. Philly (+750) now find themselves as top 3 favorites to win the Super Bowl, behind a stacked offensive Buffalo Bills (+450) and the Kansas City Chiefs (+700), and ahead of the Green Bay Packers (+1000), according to NFL odds on FanDuel.
The Eagles are led by quarterback Jalen Hurts who is in red-hot form at the moment, and is a top 2 favorite to win the 2023 AP NFL MVP. Hurts is top 4 in quarterback efficiency which is much more than was expected going into the season.
If we've learned anything from the Eagles 29-21 comeback win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, it is that they've got that championship DNA in them. They've got a complete roster and have all it takes to go all the way, barring any injuries or significant off-field drama. Philly remains the only unbeaten team in the league this season, by the way.
The Eagles are projected to take the NFC East, thanks to their current form and also the fact that they have one of the easiest schedules in the NFL. As far as the remaining NFC East teams, they don't seem so much of a threat to Philly. The New York Giants are a team to keep an eye on, though.
Miami Appears to be Making a Statement
We all had our doubts about the 2022 Miami Dolphins going into the season. Some oddsmakers projected them to win just seven of seventeen regular season games. However, the Dolphins have proved the doubters wrong with a 3-1 record.
Their 27-15 loss to the Bengals in week 4 is something to worry about, though. Not to mention the big blow they were dealt as Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion mid-game. Nevertheless, Miami's win projection has shot up, most especially after their week 3 win over the Super Bowl-favorite Bills. The Dolphins are now on par to win at least 10 games.
However, despite their wild win against the Bills, they are still very unlikely to take the AFC East. In fact, the Bills, Chiefs, and Ravens are three other AFC teams with a higher chance of making the Super Bowl than Miami. Would Miami make the Super Bowl for the first time since 1984? We'll be watching.
