As we age, our bodies start to decline. At first, it’s slow. But the older we get, the faster the visible signs of aging occur. And if you want to look healthy and vibrant, you have to fight back. What follows are several of our best suggestions and techniques for looking and feeling healthier as you age.

Show Your Skin Some Love. Your skin is one of the most important yet overlooked organs of the body. It covers the entire surface area of your body, protects your body from germs, toxins, and other contaminants, and actively works to shield your muscles, bones, and other organs from harm. Despite this, many of us totally neglect it.

As you age, gravity and biology do a number on your skin. As it thins and loses some of its elasticity, it starts to wrinkle and sag. You might even get sun spots and other blemishes. But with the proper amount of protection and nourishment, you can fortify your skin and help it retain some of its natural vibrancy.

Protection is always the first tip. While sunlight provides all-important vitamin D for your body, too much exposure can be harmful. It can lead to premature skin damage and even skin cancer. That’s why doctors and dermatologists recommend applying daily sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30.

The second step is to moisturize daily. Using a safe moisturizing product helps your skin stay hydrated, smooth, and soft. Ideally, you should select a moisturizing skin care product that also doubles as sunscreen.

Switch to a Fresher Diet. You are what you eat. If you throw back greasy cheeseburgers, pound beers, and pop frozen dinners into the microwave every night, you’re not going to look or feel your best. And while there’s nothing wrong with a cheeseburger, cold beer, or microwave dinner every now and then, the majority of your diet should be centered on eating fresh, healthy ingredients – not processed foods.

For best results, purchase your food from the supermarket and cook most of your meals at home. This allows you to control what goes into the meals (and also has the added benefit of saving you money).

Stay Properly Hydrated. The majority of your body is made up of water, so it’s important that you stay properly hydrated at all times. The general rule of thumb is to drink six to eight glasses of water each day (48-64 ounces of water). If you have trouble drinking this amount, you can supplement it with other things as well.

“While plain water is best for staying hydrated, other drinks and foods can help, too, FamilyDoctor.org mentions. “Fruit and vegetable juices, milk, and herbal teas add to the amount of water you get each day. Even caffeinated drinks (for example, coffee, tea, and soda) can contribute to your daily water intake.”

Do your best to consume at least 75 to 80 percent of the recommended daily fluid intake from plain water. However, definitely supplement with these other options if and when you need to.

Protect Your Hair. Whether right or wrong, there’s a perceived connection between hair and health. Perhaps this is because people tend to look healthier when they have fuller, thicker health.

If you’re one of the millions of men or women who suffer from hair loss, thinning, or balding, you should know that there are options for reversing your condition. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is one option. It can be administered at home using a laser hair cap that restarts the hair growth process and generates noticeable results in as little as six months.

Exercise Daily. The American Heart Association recommends getting at least 2.5 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week. Ideally, you should achieve this goal with at least five 30-minute sessions per week. Additionally, guidelines recommend getting moderate-to-high-intensity muscle-strengthening exercises (using weights or resistance bands) at least twice per week. In total, you should have five hours of physical activity per week. This will keep you fit and in shape – which makes you look healthy and young.

Look Happy and Healthy for Years to Come

It’s easy to artificially prop yourself up as you age and give off the illusion of health and youthfulness. Makeup, fillers, and fashion tricks can all help. However, if you want to naturally glow and actually be healthy and happy, you have to put in the work of caring for your body. From the food you eat to your hair care routine and sleep regimen, it all matters! Make wise choices today that your future self will thank you for.
